Herbert John Bert Pitman (20 November 1877 ? 2 December 1961) was the Third Officer on board the Titanic. He was the only officer who was not a member of the Royal Navy Reserve.
Early life and career
Pitman was born in the village of Sutton Montis near Castle Cary, Somerset, England. He was the son of farmer Henry Pitman and his wife, Sarah Marchant Pitman. After Henry's death in 1880, Sarah remarried to Charles Candy. In 1881, a census shows the young Pitman was living on 112-acre farm on Sutton Road with his brother, sister, and widowed mother.

The water bowline is a type of knot designed for use in wet conditions where other knots may slip or jam.
Although similar in finished appearance to the double bowline, the water bowline is formed with two half hitches in the standing end, one on top of the other. This is similar to the double bowline, which puts the running end through a doubled loop, hence the name. The additional friction from the two half hitches increases the security of this knot.... Pada tahun 1957, Presiden RI pertama, Soekarno, meresmikan Akademi Pelayaran Indonesia/AIP (sekarang Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran(STIP))sebagai wadah pendidikan pelaut/pelayaran secara akademis. Masa pendidikannya pada awal pertama adalah selama 3 tahun, sama dengan pendidikan Akademi lainnya setingkat dengan sarjana muda pada masa itu. Pendidikan dihabiskan selama 2 tahun di kampus/asrama dan 1 tahun penuh melakukan praktek atau Proyek Laut di kapal-kapal niaga pelayaran samudra... (3269 clicks)

Marine Engineers are the officers of a ship that operate and maintain the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. Marine Engineering staff also deal with the Hotel facilities onboard, notably the sewage, lighting, air conditioning and water systems. They deal with bulk fuel transfers, and require training in firefighting and first aid, as well as in dealing with the ship's boats and other nautical tasks- especially with cargo loading/discharging gear and safety systems, though the specific cargo discharge function remains the responsibility of deck officers and deck workers....
